Introducing the HUD. Say hello to the future of the menu.
Wednesday, 25 January 2012 01:49
Ubuntu is introducing something called the Head-Up Display, or HUD, which will ultimately replace menus in Unity applications. Here's what Mark Shuttleworth is hoping you'll see in 12.04 when you invoke the HUD from any standard Ubuntu app that supports the global menu:
Firefox 8 is out

Another version is out before we got used to the old one. The feature list is getting slimmer for every release. Here's what's new:
- Firefox 8 will come with a new add-on compatibility assistant, which is giving a better add-on control the first time users update to a new version of the browser.
- Better third-party add-on handler. With the new version, the browser will display a screen that asks the user to allow or disallow the installation of third party add-ons before they are executed for the first time. See below:
This is the last time we talk about Firefox in the news. The times when releases were meaningful are over and it seems that one version is no different from the other.

It also includes newer version of apps such as OpenOffice (LibreOffice) and Firefox.
Oracle is about to release the "Oracle NoSQL Database". It is a distributed key-value database, designed to provide highly reliable, scalable and available data storage across a configurable set of systems that function as storage nodes. At the time of this writing, it is not available for download, but should be in mid-October.
How it works
Data is stored as key-value pairs, which are written to particular storage node(s), based on the hashed value of the primary key. Storage nodes are replicated to ensure high availability, rapid failover in the event of a node failure and optimal load balancing of queries. Customer applications are written using an easy-to-use Java API to read and write data. The NoSQL Database links with the customer application, providing access to the data via the appropriate storage node for the requested key-value.
Firefox 7 is out and according to Mozilla, "Firefox 7 now uses much less memory than previous versions: often 20% to 30% less, and sometimes as much as 50% less. This means that Firefox and the websites you use will be snappier, more responsive, and suffer fewer pauses. It also means that Firefox is less likely to crash or abort due to running out of memory."
A recent virus, TrojanDropper:Win32/Vundo.L uses an original way to hijack a website. The usual way to do that, is to put a redirect in a hosts file, located in %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc directory. This virus, however, creates another "hosts" file and replaces "o" by a cyrillic "o", hiding the real one as a system file:
